Function
Traditional microgrids are formed as one or a combination of renewables and diesel or gas-fired gen-sets. They can be found in areas with no transmission penetration such as remote communities, islands, and upstream activities. Microgrids can also be installed within grid coverage, to guarantee energy independence in times of grid instability to operations such as hospitals, data centres and military complexes. Industrial and commercial operations also use microgrids to maintain production in countries with poor energy security.
How storage would improve the situation
Battery energy storage in a microgrid improves the security and quality of the power supply, while improving costs and revenue. For many different gen-sets battery storage lowers the cost of energy and improves the life span of equipment. Batteries give UPS capability and are the keystone in transforming microgrids to renewable only gen-sets.
